Abetz still can’t bring himself to denounce Blomeley’s comments

21 January 2025

Eric Abetz’s continued refusal to denounce his right-hand man Brendan Blomeley’s scathing attack on the Premier continues to fuel speculation that the seasoned political operator is moving against Premier Rockliff’s leadership.

Clarence Mayor Brendan Blomeley, a close friend and Abetz’s political ally famously called the Premier “weak”, “pathetic” and said, “he needs to go”.

Since then, not only has Eric Abetz failed to condemn Blomeley’s comments, but he has failed to pledge his support for Premier Rockliff or Leonie Hiscutt as other Ministers have.

A staunch conservative and Liberal party lifer, how does Eric Abetz feel about Leonie Hiscutt’s blatantly breaching Liberal party rules to actively assist her son’s campaign against a Liberal endorsed candidate?

More importantly, how does he feel about Premier Rockliff’s weak leadership and failure to do anything about Hiscutt’s breach? Especially considering his close friend Brendan Blomeley was unceremoniously booted out for less.

Every day that goes by without Minister Abetz condemning Mr Blomeley’s comments makes the division within the Liberal Party clearer and clearer.

Shadow Treasurer
