Abetz throws Archer under the bus on health

By Sarah Lovell MLC Shadow Minister for Health, Mental Health & Wellbeing

18 August 2026

It’s only taken three days since internal tensions between the Treasurer and Health Minister boiled over into the media for Eric Abetz to throw Bridget Archer under the bus.

In defending the need to hire a government relations expert to work in the government, the Treasurer said a Federal health lobbyist was necessary.

It sounds like exactly the sort of thing the Health Minister, Health Secretary, Deputy Secretary or any number of other highly paid bureaucrats should already be doing, but Eric Abetz clearly doesn’t think Bridget Archer is doing enough.

Bridget Archer has so far failed to stand-up to Eric Abetz’ $700 million worth of cuts to health – even going as far as backing them in.

Now the tensions between the Treasurer and the Health Minister have been aired, will she finally rally against Abetz’ planned decimation of a health system at breaking point?
