Bell Bay Aluminium deal worth fighting for

By Josh Willie MP - Labor Leader & Janie Finlay MP - Deputy Labor Leader, Shadow Minister for Energy & Renewables

01 October 2026

Bell Bay Aluminium deal worth fighting for

Labor strongly welcomes the deal to secure the future of Bell Bay Aluminium and acknowledges the relief it will bring to the local community, and the certainty it will bring to the Northern Tasmanian economy.

This issue has never solely been about the 550 plus workers at Bell Bay Aluminium.

It’s been about the contractors, transport operators, manufacturers, small businesses and local suppliers whose livelihoods also depend on the smelter.

It’s also been about the local community – with school enrolments, sporting clubs and organisations all hinging on a deal being reached.

Labor has been proud to fight for local jobs, families and community at every step of this process, and we welcome the certainty this deal will bring and the confidence that will return to the region.
