Building Tasmania workers deserve respect

By Josh Willie MP - Labor Leader

Building Tasmania workers deserve respect

The Premier announced in March that he was sacking 250 workers from Building Tasmania.

The treatment of everyone working in the department since then has been appalling.

Workers have been left in deep uncertainty, with shifting timeframes for information causing confusion and chaos.

They have been told that their teams are on the chopping block, but six months later are still in limbo about who’s staying and who’s going.

Eric Abetz is treating the workers he is sacking as numbers rather than people.  The Treasurer still hasn’t ruled out forced redundancies, and the process he’s set in motion provides no certainty they won’t happen.

The mess at Building Tasmania relates to 250 roles. Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of sacking 1,700 workers across the state, and it’s difficult to see how things will improve as Tasmanians are made to pay for 13 years of Liberal waste.
