Business confidence collapses again under Rockliff

07 May 2025

The latest Roy Morgan business confidence report shows that Tasmania now has “clearly the lowest” business confidence in the country under Premier Rockliff’s minority government.

Confidence has collapsed 17 points in Tasmania, which is the biggest fall in the nation. A year ago, Tasmania was in third place.

Famously, the TCCI said it would be difficult to trust the Rockliff minority government ever again after its handling of the Spirits fiasco. That lack of trust is crystal clear in the data.

From botching the Spirits replacement project, jacking up transmission costs for our major industrials, and racking up almost $10 billion worth of record debt, Premier Rockliff and his minority government have trashed Tasmania's economic reputation.

Since Premier Rockliff took his government into minority, 7,000 full-time jobs have been lost, billions of dollars in renewable energy investment is being held up, and planeloads of working age Tasmanians are leaving the state for better opportunities elsewhere.

In contrast, Tasmanian Labor is back as the party of jobs and the economy. We’ve outlined our plan to invigorate the night-time economy, and we’ve also committed to giving the Coordinator-General real powers to drive investment and bust through the Liberals’ red tape.

Businesses don’t trust the way this government is running the economy, and neither do Tasmanians.
