‘In School Education’ to bear the brunt of Abetz’ DECYP cuts

Right to Information documents have revealed that Tasmanian schools are on Eric Abetz’ chopping block to pay for 13 years of Liberal waste.

The documents show that a shocking 84 per cent, or $192 million of the $228 million cuts to the Department of Education, Children and Young People will come from ‘In School Education’ alone.

As it stands, Tasmania consistently produces the worst education outcomes of any state in the country despite the outstanding efforts of teachers and school support staff.

$192 million in cuts to ‘In School Education’ will result in even more students being taught in classrooms without proper support, with outdated resources, by over-stretched educators.

As a former teacher, I know our teachers rely on an ecosystem of support around them, and our schools cannot do more with less.

Minister for Education Jo Palmer has failed to explain how our schools, teachers, students and families won’t be left worse off – that’s because she can’t.

We know strong public schools build stronger communities, a stronger workforce, and a stronger future. Every dollar cut from education comes at a cost to Tasmania’s future.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, Premier Rockliff has put Eric Abetz in charge of cutting jobs and services to clean up the mess, and Jo Palmer is allowing it to be at the expense of education.
