Liberals put political interest ahead of police, community safety

04 June 2026

Jen Butler MP
Shadow Minister for Police, Fire & Emergency Services

Liberals put political interest ahead of police, community safety

The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to place its own political interest above the safety of Tasmanians and Tasmanian police officers.

Today, while sitting next to the Police Commissioner in Budget Estimates, Minister Felix Ellis continued to reject the strong support from Tasmania Police for limits on the number of guns in the community.

Concerningly, the Minister couldn’t rule out that the Tasmanian Liberals have been influenced by the powerful gun lobby, or rule out accepting future donations from it.

With One Nation circling, Premier Rockliff is under immense pressure from the conservative elements of his party to make more and more extreme choices to stave them off.

The first job of any government is to keep the community safe.

But instead, the Liberals are defending unlimited guns in the community in an effort to keep their own jobs safe.
