Liberty Bell Bay support welcome

Tasmanian Labor welcomes today’s announcement of a support package for workers at Liberty Bell Bay.

Last week, when we raised the matter in Parliament, the Tasmanian Liberal Government seemed disinterested, suggesting there was no money available to help. Workers deserved better than that response.

Supporting workers is in Labor’s DNA, so we engaged with the workforce on site, held the State Government to account, and were pleased to see them change their tune.

Throughout this process we have engaged regularly with Minister Ayers and our Federal colleagues to advocate for a positive outcome, and we thank them for the role they have played.

While today's announcement is certainly not job done, we look forward to the Liberty Bell Bay workers’ jobs being secured through the sale of the smelter to a new owner, and we will keep fighting for the workers until their jobs are locked in.
